FINDING THE PERFECT PAIR OF TAI CHI SHOES

Finding the Right Pair
One of the questions I'm asked most often is, "What shoes should I wear for Tai Chi?"
The answer depends on where you practice.
Over the years, I've practiced Tai Chi on hardwood floors, carpeting, pavement, and outdoors. I've tried several different styles of Tai Chi and Kung Fu shoes, and each has its own advantages depending on the surface.
Like many things in Tai Chi, there isn't one perfect answer. The best shoe is the one that allows you to move comfortably, maintain your balance, and practice with confidence.
My Search for Tai Chi Shoes
If you're in a hurry, here's my recommendation: for most people, a lightweight rubber-bottom Kung Fu shoe is the best all-around choice. If you primarily practice on smooth hardwood floors, traditional plastic-bottom Tai Chi shoes are an excellent option.
Several years ago, I made a trip to Chinatown in New York City. While I was there enjoying a late-night meal at the famous Wo Hop restaurant, I decided to spend some time looking for a traditional pair of Tai Chi shoes.

I visited one of the local shops and asked if they carried my size. Since the sizing was different from what I was used to in the United States, the shop owner searched through several boxes until we found a few pairs for me to try on.
While looking through the selection, I noticed a pair with cotton soles. They looked like they were made from higher-quality materials than the traditional plastic-bottom shoes I had originally planned to buy. The soles even had a little extra cushioning.
The store was about to close, so I made a quick decision and purchased the cotton-bottom pair before heading home.
A Lesson Learned
The following day, I couldn't wait to try my new Tai Chi shoes.
They were comfortable.
Unfortunately, they weren't comfortable for the type of floor I practiced on.
As soon as I began practicing my Tai Chi form on a smooth hardwood floor, I felt like my feet wanted to slide out from under me. Instead of concentrating on my movements, I found myself concentrating on not slipping.
That experience taught me an important lesson.
The best Tai Chi shoe isn't necessarily the one that looks the nicest or feels the most comfortable when you first put it on.
It's the one that's designed for the surface where you practice.
My Return to Chinatown
A short time later, I returned to Chinatown and visited the same store.
This time, I purchased the traditional reddish-brown rubber-bottom Tai Chi slippers I had originally intended to buy.

For anyone wondering about sizing, I normally wear a US size 10½, and I found that a size 45 fit me comfortably.
The moment I practiced in them, I knew I had made the right decision.
On a smooth hardwood floor, they provided exactly the amount of grip and slide I was looking for.
While walking around Chinatown afterward, I found another martial arts supply store selling the same style of shoes for a lower price. If you're shopping in person, it's worth visiting a few stores before making your purchase.
Which Tai Chi Shoes Do I Recommend?
After more than 32 years of daily practice, I've found that different shoes work better on different surfaces.
Cotton-bottom Tai Chi shoes
- Best suited for carpeting.
- Too slippery for my taste on smooth hardwood floors.
Traditional plastic-bottom Tai Chi shoes
- Excellent for hardwood floors.
- Also work well on pavement.
Rubber-bottom Kung Fu shoes
- The pair I wear most often.
- Comfortable, versatile, and suitable for a variety of surfaces.
If I could own only one pair, I would choose a simple white slip-on Kung Fu shoe with a rubber sole. They've been the shoes I've reached for most often over the years because they're comfortable, versatile, and work well on almost every surface where I practice.
Choosing the Right Shoe for You
Before buying a pair of Tai Chi shoes, ask yourself one simple question:
Where do I practice most often?
Your answer will usually determine which type of shoe is best for you.
The perfect Tai Chi shoe isn't the most expensive one or the one that looks the best.
It's the one that helps you practice safely, comfortably, and consistently.
